LEGISLATIVE AND INDUSTRY NEWS
Strengthening Workplace Protections:
New Amendment Targets Sexual Harassment
from October 2024
The Worker Protection (Amendment of Equality Act 2010) Act 2023 brings changes aimed at strengthening protections against workplace sexual harassment, including from third parties. Set to take effect on 26 October 2024, this amendment places greater accountability on employers to create safer work environments.
Under the new amendment, employers will have a legal duty to proactively prevent harassment. If they fail to take reasonable steps, they could be held liable. Additionally, if an employment tribunal awards compensation for sexual harassment, it may increase the amount by up to 25% if the employer cannot prove they’ve fulfilled their preventative responsibilities.
