Understanding Ethical Labour Standards in the UK: My Fashion Journey and How You Can Join

In my three decades in fashion from shop floor to manufacturing insights, I’ve seen the industry’s evolution firsthand. From winning a Women into Enterprise Start-Up Award for a sleepwear brand that I designed and manufactured in Scotland in 2004, to a side project in 2023, the journey has been a fulfilling challenge. But it’s my last ten years focused on workers’ rights and ethics that have truly highlighted the opportunities in UK manufacturing, and how much talent there is!

Four years ago, I embarked on a new chapter with Stronger Together’s Fast Forward Apparel and General Merchandise programme. A collaborative, education, audit and improvement initiative designed for those, like me, who are passionate about ethics in the fashion industry and the people that made my clothes. I recognised quickly, how invaluable this initiative would be—not just for newcomers to ethics, but also for seasoned professionals who could benefit from the support rather than navigating it alone!

The world of ethics, legislation, and human rights is ever-changing, and it’s not enough to simply follow a process once and call it done. With this initiative, you become part of a collaboration of brands and suppliers, all sharing insights and knowledge to navigate these changes together.

Fast forward to today, and my belief in this programme is stronger than ever with the launch of a new Brand Associate level, geared towards small Brands starting out on their journey.

So, what does this programme offer? Whether you are a brand or a supplier, our online education platform simplifies UK legislation and international labour standards through online videos, comprehensive guidance, templates, and resources, ensuring you stay ahead in an ever-evolving landscape.

But that’s not all. We also offer access to sourcing opportunities, fostering growth within UK production which is key to our goal of a thriving ethical UK supply base. And with collaboration at our core, we connect brands, small and big, with fellow peers who have firsthand experience in ethical practices. This exchange of knowledge and experience is invaluable in helping you achieve your ethical goals and I’m proud to be an ambassador for this programme.

The ultimate goal is to bring about positive change.
Together, we can make a difference.
